Further evidence of India's imagination was seen this evening at Pedong's dusty sports ground. Proudly positioned at the very centre of town this hive of sporting activity never fails to brighten our spirits after a tough day at school. The escapism it provides along with a cup of Snacks Bar's finest spiced tea is second to none. The children have a unique way of sharing the scant ground, and it's not unusual to find 3 football matches, a game of cricket or two and a few badminton contests all occurring simultaneously, and with total acceptance that the ground is there to be shared by all.
Still, this evening we witnessed the best bit of sporting imagination yet. As we arrived with the usual steaming cup of chai in hand, St. George's school were holding their annual sports day. With no white paint or any formal kind of running track to be seen the students effortlessly formed their very own solution: a 400m circle of children around which the athletes would run, and of course it also provided ringside seats for all. Genius.
Definitely one of the most entertaining cups of tea we've had yet, and all for the princely sum of 9 pence!
